Demonheart: Hunters - In The Making

After the first Demonheart game which was a visual novel, I'm going back to the RPG roots with a look resembling my favorite game of all time, Baldur's Gate. Well, I can hope, but anyway. The next game is called Demonheart: Hunters and it starts in Ravage. It has a coming soon page on Steam, so you can wishlist it here. It will most likely be on itch.io as well.

Both Demonheart games have stories slightly different from the modules, with some of the same characters.

  1. I really loved your nwn modules - it was rivaling ADWR in quality and had so much potential.

I'm a bit sad/disappointed to see them filed away.

With that out of the way, I'm glad you've been doing well!

I'll wish for your success in this sequel.

  2. Great news! I'm happy to see you're doing well as a developer and continuing the story you obviously care so much about :)
I think you did a great job with DH1, and I'm curious to see how the sequel turns out. Definitely on my wishlist :) It's a pity you decided to cut out the adult parts of the story, but DH1 was good enough without them. I don't think Thayn's going to be happy about it though ;)

Couple of questions: what editor are you using, and will you give characters hand-drawn portraits? The art for DH1 was quite good, it would be a pity to see it gone completely.

  3. Thayn is proving to be quite a pain in that regard. How do I make him NOT adult rated? xD He doesn't even have to do anything, he talks too much. If he ends up being too nasty, some of his stuff can get separated into an adult patch later.

I'm using RPG Maker MV with Medieval resource packs, and I wrote some big plugins to customize the UI and make it simpler to use.

The two main artists from DH1 are not exactly part of my team, they were freelancers, and it was quite stressful to depend on the same people with so many updates. Since I hope the next game will have updates too, and DLCs, I find it simpler to use premade art and do some things myself. I did the custom portraits for the modules mostly myself, and edited some faces in the VN too, so I might end up doing the main characters' faces, or I could hire someone to do all their busts, but only as a finishing touch, when the game is almost done. :)

  4. Yes, I figured Thayn wouldn't play nice with the rating. He's as close to a one-track mind as it gets ;) If I'm not mistaken, the most SFW topic he talks about is bloody murder - which admittedly is probably considered children's TV in some states ;)
I do like the sound of an adult patch in general, I'd look forward to it - but I won't get my hopes up until you make an official announcement.

I've seen some impressive work made with MV, it's not my favorite but it can be used to good effect. Resource libraries must help immensely, and simplification sounds awesome!

Depending on freelancers must be quite stressful. I haven't run my own projects but I back several on patreon and I can see that even with a fairly steady income stream it's hard to find people you can rely on to produce regular content, be it code or art or writing. It must be like hardware: it's not a question of if, but when.

Anyway thank you for the reply, and keep up the good work! I look forward to the next chapter :)

  5. I am so excited for this! Loved the NWN modules and the visual novels! Reminds me of Planescape Torment, except we play as Bright instead of The Nameless One.

Donated to the PayPal link set up on Steam to show support for the years of amazing gaming you have provided! <3

    1. Thank you!

Planescape Torment was one of the games that inspired me, except I never finished that one. I went pretty far in and then my brother gave the CDs to a friend. xD It was a long time ago, I haven't gotten around to replaying.

    2. Hahaha, Planescape Torment is a good game but Demonheart is way better! Can’t wait for Hunters to come out. Absolutely love the isometric crpg feel. Baldur’s Gate’s storytelling is unparalleled.

  7. I suppose there will be no continuation on the NWN engine, and module ended on chapter 2 ?

  8. is this continuation where VN ended or ? and how does one insert all the choices from VN (if at all) ?
i really hate series when everything you did in previous series does not matter and it starts from "default" events which is whatever author decided to set. it really fucks with storytelling.

  9. OMG I haven't checked this in a while but I did see Hunters in development.
You have no idea how happy I am. Baldur's Gate is my top favorite game as well and this brings so many feelings.
Good luck on this project, and I can't wait to play it!
Been supporting your work for a while and greatly enjoyed the Visual novel, even if its generally not my cup of tea.
