<p>After working on Demonheart the visual novel and Demonheart: Hunters the RPG for years, I needed to take a break from the DH world.</p><p>I started with an old idea: a jester protagonist with a lady friend in a cursed castle, the king is dead, everyone is insane, and the court wizard is shady as hell. I changed some things around, the shady wizard became a lady, and a new gay character appeared, due to the latest influences from me playing certain anime games. 😏</p><p>Then I did my own NaNoWriMo challenge, but in July, and the first draft of the new visual novel was born. Of course, a lot of things have changed from the initial idea, and between each draft. The editing of the text took a lot longer than a month, and I'm still adding more. For the Demonheart games, I actually wasn't writing everything in a huge text document like this, so this is a new approach for me. I'm having fun and feeling inspired for this new game - which wasn't the case by the end of DHH. There was something really hard about writing a sequel, and I felt under pressure the entire time.</p><p>One of my goals during this project is to get better at art, so I am doing the character art myself, with some advice from other people. Thanks to the artists who give me feedback!</p><p>It's also the first time that I'm writing a male protagonist (well, other than my teenage attempts at writing novels 😏 and the early ideas of this same jester story that I've had around for years.) I guess I needed a TOTAL break from DH, and writing another female protagonist with Brash-y people hitting on her would not cut it. 🙈 I hope DH fans can identify with this new protagonist. For everyone coming after playing the modules, the visual novel is an alternate universe. It begins before the player got acquainted with Orchid and deals with the Orchid/Raze + Rivera storylines. Some of the content you've already seen, but most has been rewritten. You can see on the game pages what it is and what it isn't (everything that is not shown, you can assume the game does not contain).<br />

The voice acting stretch goals are unlikely to be reached, but we're considering partial voice acting anyway. Production always takes about 3x longer than I hope.<br />

I am the worst critic of my work and tend to forget the good sides of it. I just forget what I wrote, and when enough time has passed, I play and go like, "Hey, when did I write this? This is funny. Maybe it's not so bad after all O.o "<br />

When I feel like something isn't right with the planned plot, I can't write anything. I can't admit to myself that the plot is wrong - I just get a writer's block.<br />
<br />
I tend to get stuck halfway when trying to create a game with a huge plot. I remember how I first split the story in halves, and then split the first half into chapters 1 and 2, because as I worked on them, it became clear that chapter 1 is finished, while chapter 2 is nowhere near so. Likewise, I have now finished the first half of what I thought would make it into the game, and was totally panicked about the second half. So, the solution that has worked so far is to cut the part I'm having problems with. Then I have an almost finished game, as opposed to a huge mess!<br />
<br />
Thinking about pleasing everyone definitely gets me stuck. I have to pick one way of doing things and stick with it, and it will be good enough to someone, somewhere.<br />
<br />
<b>The current state of the game content:</b><br />

The game will be shorter than we all hoped, but finished, in a way. There's not enough time to go anywhere meaningful with Brash, and a relationship with Ari/Arana just doesn't fit (that's what had me stuck for so long - I literally have the game finished all AROUND the parts where she appears). But at least Raze will get an ending. :D Which doesn't have to be the end of it in case there is a sequel. But a sequel is optional.<br />

You will be seeing more of the guys from the camp.<br />

Raze will start talking in your head from the beginning.<br />
<br />
The number of characters is limited, it's all about the major ones.<br />

The ending will be content that has been planned for a long time and never published.<br />

I'm preparing for a fundraising campaign and have even auditioned some voice actors, so now Raze and Orchid have voices, at least for the campaign material. When the campaign starts, I'll make a new post here. The goals are to raise money to keep paying the graphic artists and hopefully have the game voiced, and to raise awareness of the game.<br />

Before you agree to support anything, I have to say the game will not be the same as the modules.<br />

It won't be a sex game. Now the 72% of you who said you wouldn't play this if it had no sex can give up on me. xD I haven't decided if there will be blackout sex, illustrated but only the decent parts, or none at all, but if any exists, it can only be with the main characters, and I can't even promise that much.<br />
<br />
The Apocalypse plot will not be there. Maybe in a sequel. The game will mostly be about Orchid, Raze and Rivera. It's not like I can easily finish the module content and package it in the game. That means the game will be shorter than all the modules combined were supposed to be. It will have all the familiar places, but I'm not just copy-pasting, either. Expect some unexpected turns. And an ending.<br />
<br />
Some characters will change personalities or appearance. Arana is getting a name change because I've grown to dislike her name.<br />
<br />
Lastly, I'd say the first half of the game is mostly written (it took 3-4 months), and for my part, I will be able to finish the content, because this time I did not design a world ending story.<br />

I've been busy <b>converting Demonheart from NWN modules to a standalone game</b>. Basically, it will be a conversation based interactive novel, illustrated by someone other than me.<br />

Now, I expect some of you to be angry because there will be repeated content, and why won't that witch Rivera go away already...? How much fun can the demonheart girl really have in the Golden Forest replaying Chapter 1 over and over? (More fun than me rewriting it for ages, I bet. :S)<br />
<br />
But... We have to think of the others who haven't seen Demonheart yet because they don't play NWN. Some people can't even run my modules, I don't know what's going on. Others just give me an outraged look and ask why on Earth was I making content for such an old game.<br />
<br />
And now the peak of my honesty. I didn't know how long the development of the Demonheart modules would take. I just wanted people to see my work. These stories are a half of my life. Before the Prelude module, I didn't even know if people would like what I'm making.<br />
<br />
I had just started college when I began serious work on the modules. So much time has passed, that getting a job has become a pressing concern for me. Out there in the real world, my job would be programming 8 hours a day for someone else. I don't think that would leave me the time or energy to do my own projects. I'd rather make my own games for a living than be locked up in some company's basement writing someone else's software. Plus, all that human contact. Maybe you've been able to guess this due to the fact that I've spent all that time coming up with alternative worlds - I am one secluded person.<br />

In the end I'll do what I have to, but first let me try my luck with this project.

There will be changes in the plot and the game will start a little earlier than the Prelude module. I'll write more about it when there is time, but I am actively working on the game (just having doubts if I should be writing blog posts or game content).<br />

As some of you may know, parts of Chapter 3 have been in existence for years now, because that was supposed to be Chapter 2 until I turned things around. That content is part of my first big Demonheart module. It will require lots of rewriting to make things neat again, and of course not all of the old content is usable, due to not being good enough or not fitting into the story anymore. Word count is unclear for now, since I decided to start a new module and import existing resources from the old one if required.<br />

My first struggle with Chapter 3: tying all Chapter 2 endings together. You always come to the same town, but I have to write different conversations for different parties. I was most inspired to write the conversations you get if you have all the companions. :P<br />

What's left to do is tie some more loose ends inside the module (like partially finished conversations), track relationships through variables, and a lot of testing.<br />

The relationships are still confusing me, since Brash seems to have an unfair advantage as the pushy been-everywhere bastard he is. If there are going to be big romance conflicts, I'll leave them for the next module. It's true that you can drag Brash everywhere with you before ending this module (which was a pain to make and I might have missed some places where he would comment), but I don't want to put big romance conflicts at the end of the module. They are a lot of work and they will be needed in the next module anyway. If there are going to be exclusive relationships, I like having more time to decide. So, we have a strange situation in which, if you were trying to romance Arana and Brash at the same time, they would kind of ignore each other and only talk about it later. This might change, but it's something I'll have to decide on soon.<br />

It's been a long time without an update and even longer without a screenshot.<br />

While working on the old tedious tasks, I had to make some unplanned changes to the existing content to keep me entertained. I did this shortly before releasing chapter 1 too, where the "hospital" dream used to have only one version (for the good/neutral PC). Now, in chapter 2, you can make a choice in a dream that used to have only one default player reaction. (Dreams are weird and blurry, so you don't always have a choice.)<br />
